Using Google Calendar for reminders
People use calendars for a lot of different purposes. In the book Getting Things Done
, David Allen suggests that a lot of people put way to much on their calendars and he says that to be effective you should only put actual day and time specific information on your calendar. Then you should use a different system to keep track of the rest of your projects.
I mostly agree, however I have been using Google calendar for another purpose. In addition to adding day and time specific information, I am also using it for what he calls a tickler file.
Tickler files are not as funny as they would appear on the surface [ha, I know, I'm hilarious]…but they are something you setup to remind you of day and time specific information in the future so that you can set it and forget it. That is exactly what Google calendar can do for you.
Simply put in a piece of information for a specific time and date in the future that you do not want to forget. Then set it up to send you an email reminder a few minutes before the scheduled event.
One of the keys to getting things done is to get things off your mind. Google calendar is a free way to do that and I have used it with a lot of success lately. And you can set it up as far in the future as you Google calendar will allow you.
I even have the QuickList app for my Android phone that lets me input Google calendar events with my voice on the go! Simple.
Get a Gmail account and start using it to keep your projects and life on track.
